Items That Are Red Flags For Insurance Companies

Here is a list of electrical components that home  insurance companies  are looking for:

  • Knob and tube wiring – used primarily in homes built before 1930
  • Aluminum wiring – used primarily in homes and buildings from mid 1970’s to late 1980’s
  • DIY electrical installations – some home owner electrical installations  are dangerous and can lead to fires and electrocution
  • Insufficient height of electrical mast – Some older homes have main power lines to close to decks and driveways
  • Old Wiring And Service Panels –  some older brands of service panels and wiring are prone to failure. Federal Pacific service panels and breakers produced  prior to 1980 are a concern.
  • Incomplete or Abandoned wiring – some electrical projects are not terminated correctly after abandonment.
  • GFCI outlets – No GFCI outlets near a open water source or outside of the home or garage are concerns for the home insurance companies as lack of GFCI can lead to  shock or electrocution.
  • AFCI outlets  – All bedrooms now are required to have AFCI outlets, but older homes can be exempt if outlets are installed properly.
  • Improper labeling of service panel – electrical shock can happen if the right breaker is not shut off
  • Improper installation of service panel – double taps. wrong sized wiring for breakers, improperly secured wiring
